We're constantly working on updating this website . . .

Dear faculty, staff, and colleagues:

To ensure the safety of our full community, it important that we move quickly to pro
mote and enable social distancing. In this regard, the MCE will not be offered this year. However, please feel free to take the challenge while practicing social distancing. Stay safe!—Ron Bannon

Historically, a challenge exam allowed university students to question their initial placement. However, these challenge examinations are mainly a collection of excellent questions that relate to the mathematics curriculum at Essex County College, albeit at a level that in intended to engage your mind in a meaningful way. Typically five questions that may include mathematical materials up to and including calculus, and you'll be given sixty-minutes to do your best. Many of the problems are from actual high school exams, and none go beyond manipulative mathematics. Don't be worried if you find these questions difficult, but instead, be enthused by problems that you can understand.
Documents---including exams and answer keys---related to this website will be available online, and will be updated often. Starting in January 2018, and each month thereafter, during the normal academic calendar, approximately five questions pertaining to materials taught in MTH 100, 119, 120, 121, and 122 will be posted. Please consider contacting Ron Bannon if you see an error in any posted question or solution. Yes, I'll give you credit by citing your name within the document.

April 2019 MCE Results: Thursday, April 4th, 2019, 2:40---3:40 p.m., in room 3420 (Physics classroom). Results will be made available when grading is completed.

In the weeks/months/years to come, we will be presenting a series of examinations, some for sheer practice, and others for assessing your abilities with respect to all participants. All questions are possible with the mathematical tools that you've learned at Essex County College but do not feel bad if you have trouble with any of the problems. Solutions will be provided after each session, and I encourage all to assess their work after each session carefully.
